Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • Fresh button or cremini mushrooms (about 24 large caps)
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh herbs (parsley, thyme, or chives)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Optional Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs for topping (optional)
  • Red pepper flakes or cayenne (optional for spice)
  • Cooked crumbled bacon or sausage (optional for meaty twist)
  • Additional cheese blend (mozzarella, cheddar, or goat cheese) if desired

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Mushrooms: Gently clean the mushrooms with a damp cloth and carefully remove the stems. Set the caps aside and finely chop the stems for the filling.
  2. Sauté the Mushroom Stems and Garlic: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped mushroom stems and minced garlic, cooking for about 5 minutes until softened and fragrant.
  3. Make the Creamy Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine softened cream cheese, grated Parmesan, sautéed mushroom stems and garlic, chopped fresh herbs, salt, and pepper. Mix until smooth and spreadable.
  4. Stuff the Mushroom Caps: Spoon generous amounts of the creamy filling into each mushroom cap, pressing gently to fill fully. Sprinkle breadcrumbs on top if using for extra crunch.
  5. Bake Until Golden and Bubbling: Arrange stuffed mushrooms on a baking sheet. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes until tops are golden, cheese is melted, and mushrooms are tender.

Notes

  • Choose fresh, firm, blemish-free mushrooms for best texture and flavor.
  • Sautéing the mushroom stems and garlic before mixing enhances the depth of flavor.
  • Use room temperature cream cheese to ensure a smooth filling without lumps.
  • Pat mushroom caps dry before filling to prevent sogginess during baking.
  • Experiment with herbs like thyme or rosemary to add unique aromas.
  • To keep the recipe gluten-free, omit breadcrumbs or use gluten-free alternatives.
  • For vegan version, use vegan cream cheese and nutritional yeast instead of Parmesan.
  • Consider adding red pepper flakes for a spicy kick or cooked bacon for a meaty twist.
