Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough and Base

  • 1 pizza dough (store-bought or homemade), enough to roll into a 12×16 inch rectangle
  • 1 cup marinara sauce
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Garlic powder, to taste

Meats

  • 4 oz sliced pepperoni
  • 4 oz sliced salami
  • 4 oz sliced ham

Cheeses

  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Herbs and Seasonings

  • 1 tbsp fresh basil or oregano, chopped (or dried, to taste)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Start with your pizza dough at room temperature. Lightly flour your work surface and roll the dough into a large rectangle, about 12 by 16 inches. This gives enough space to evenly layer your fillings and wrap the stromboli securely.
  2. Layer the Fillings: Spread a thin, even layer of marinara sauce across the dough, leaving about an inch border around the edges. Layer the sliced Italian meats and shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the sauce. Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese and chosen fresh herbs on top. Season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Avoid overfilling to prevent leaks.
  3. Roll and Seal: Starting from one long side, carefully roll the dough over the fillings into a tight log shape. Pinch and seal the edges to lock everything inside and tuck the ends under. Place seam side down on a greased baking sheet or parchment paper.
  4. Add Finishing Touches: Brush the entire stromboli with olive oil. Sprinkle garlic powder and Parmesan cheese over the top for added flavor and to encourage a golden crust. Optionally, cut a few small slits on top to allow steam to escape during baking.
  5. Bake: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the stromboli for 25-30 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and crisp. Let the stromboli rest for 5 minutes before slicing to keep cheese and fillings intact.

Notes

  • Use cold dough by chilling it for 10-15 minutes to make rolling easier.
  • Do not overfill the stromboli to prevent leakage and soggy crust.
  • Ensure even layering of fillings for flavorful slices in every piece.
  • For a shiny golden crust, brush with egg wash (1 beaten egg mixed with a splash of water) before baking.
  • Allow the stromboli to cool briefly before slicing to set the cheese and fillings.
