Ingredients

Scale

Meat

  • 1 lb lean ground hamburger (beef)

Vegetables

  • 4 cups Yukon Gold or red potatoes, washed and cut into bite-sized cubes
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced

Sauce & Dairy

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom or cream of chicken soup
  • 1/2 cup milk or broth
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or blend)

Seasonings

  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp paprika

Instructions

  1. Brown the Hamburger. Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook the ground hamburger until fully browned and no longer pink. Drain any excess fat, then transfer the browned meat to your crockpot.
  2. Prepare the Potatoes and Onion. Wash and cut the potatoes into bite-sized cubes to ensure even cooking. Dice the onion finely and add both the potatoes and onion to the crockpot with the browned hamburger.
  3. Mix in Soup and Seasonings. In a bowl, combine the cream soup, milk or broth, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Pour this mixture over the meat and potatoes in the crockpot, stirring gently to coat everything evenly.
  4. Slow Cook Until Tender. Cover and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours or on high for 3 to 4 hours, until potatoes are tender and flavors meld together.
  5. Add Cheese and Finish Cooking. About 30 minutes before serving, sprinkle shredded cheese evenly on top of the casserole. Cover again and let the cheese melt, forming a golden, bubbly crust.

Notes

  • Use even-sized potatoes to ensure uniform cooking without mushy or underdone pieces.
  • Brown meat thoroughly to add depth of flavor and prevent a watery casserole.
  • Layer hearty ingredients such as potatoes at the bottom for better heat distribution.
  • Avoid over-stirring during cooking to maintain potato texture.
  • Add cheese near the end of cooking for a perfect melted topping.
