Crispy Mozzarella Balls

Crispy Mozzarella Balls

Crispy Mozzarella Balls are golden-fried, crunchy snacks with a deliciously gooey mozzarella center. Perfect as appetizers, party snacks, or comfort food, they are simple to prepare and loved by both kids and adults. Serve them with marinara sauce, garlic aioli, or ranch dressing for an irresistible bite every time.

Ingredients

Mozzarella Cheese

  • Fresh, full-fat mozzarella balls or block mozzarella cut into bite-sized cubes

Coating

  • All-purpose flour, seasoned with salt and black pepper
  • Beaten eggs
  • Panko breadcrumbs (or regular breadcrumbs), mixed with garlic powder and Italian seasoning
  • Salt, black pepper, garlic powder, Italian seasoning (for seasoning the flour and breadcrumbs)

Frying

  • Neutral-flavored oil with a high smoke point (vegetable or canola oil) for deep frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cheese: Cut block mozzarella into uniform bite-sized cubes or use small mozzarella balls. Pat them dry thoroughly with paper towels to remove excess moisture and prevent sogginess during frying.
  2. Set Up Your Breading Stations: Arrange three shallow bowls — one with flour seasoned with salt and pepper, one with beaten eggs, and one with the breadcrumb mixture combined with garlic powder and Italian herbs.
  3. Coat the Mozzarella: Roll each cheese piece in the seasoned flour to help the egg adhere. Dip into the beaten eggs, then coat generously with the breadcrumb mixture. For extra crunch, repeat the egg and breadcrumb coating once more.
  4. Chill the Balls: Place the coated mozzarella balls on a baking sheet in a single layer and freeze for at least one hour. Freezing helps solidify the cheese and prevents it from leaking during frying.
  5. Fry Until Golden: Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) in a deep fryer or heavy pan. Fry the balls in batches for 2-3 minutes or until evenly golden brown. Avoid overcrowding to maintain oil temperature.
  6. Drain and Serve: Remove the balls with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to absorb excess oil. Serve warm to enjoy the gooey, melty cheese center.

Notes

  • Freeze before frying to minimize cheese leakage and maintain crust integrity.
  • Use fresh oil to ensure a crisp crust and avoid unpleasant flavors.
  • Maintain oil temperature between 350°F-360°F for even cooking.
  • Double coating with egg and breadcrumbs creates a thicker, crunchier crust.
  • Serve immediately for the best taste and texture.
